TOP 5 ENERGY EFFICIENT AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGIES

Variable Valve Timing:-
Variable Valve Timing is a mechanical-electronic technology that enables the engine to have multiple camshafts. This system allows these camshafts to change timings of the intake or exhaust valves during the engines operation. Infact, the VVT is a generic term for an automobile piston technology.
The advantage of VVT is that the system can directly select valve timing and the valve lift corresponding to the operating speed of the engine.
Most of the Ferrari cars and Honda cars use this technology. Hondaś new city is equipped with this technology which offers outstanding performance and thrilling driving dynamics.
The major benefits of this technology are improved fuel efficiency and optimized performance over a wide variety of driving conditions.
Turbochargers and Superchargers:-
Turbochargers and Superchargers are technologies that are equipped in the engine to force compressed air into the cylinder. An increased amount of fuel and air is supplied to the engineś cylinder. This increase power output and performance because more air-fuel mixture is used for combustion.
A turbocharger is driven by exhaust from the engine whereas a supercharger fan is powered by the engine itself.
Nowadays, most turbochargers and superchargers are intercooled. As a result the compressed air can be cooled once it comes out of the compressor. As the air is cooled the air becomes denser and puts less stress on the engine components, further improving performance.
Today, cars like Chevrolet Optra, Fiat Palio etc. are equipped with turbocharged diesel engine. The advantage is the amazing performance.
Direct Fuel Injection:-
Direct Fuel Injection is a Fuel Delivery technology. It was introduced in 2004. This aims at enabling the petrol engines to burn fuel more efficiently. As a result, the power output increases, emission reduces and fuel efficiency is improved. In a direct-injection system, the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder and the air enters through the intake manifold. This advanced technology allows more control over the amount of fuel injected and time taken for injection. This also helps in a more complete combustion that further helps to churn out more power from each drop of gasoline.
Today, many car manufacturers including Audi have incorporated Direct Fuel Injection technology. In India, cars like Indica V2, Indigo, Safari etc. uses this technology.
Continuously Variable Transmission:-
The Continuously Variable Transmission is a type of automatic transmission which brings out more usable power, improves fuel efficiency, and offers a smoother driving experience.
The CVT enables easy, efficient and quick change in gear ratios between maximum and minimum values. This enables the engine to run at its most efficient rpm (Revolutions Per Minute) over a range of speeds. This has the power to handle powerful engines and provide quicker acceleration while maintaining superior fuel efficiency.
Among the Indian cars, the Honda Civic hybrid and Mitsubishi Lancer use CVT.

Automated Manual Transmission:-
The Automated Manual Transmission technology combines the features of both manual and automatic transmission technologies. Its functioning is much similar to the manual transmission in the sense that it doesn´t require clutch actuation. This system is hydraulically/electronically controlled.
The key benefits are smooth and quick gear shifting and improved drivability.

General Motors have announced that their new HydroGen4 fuel-cell vehicle is ready for the real-world testing. There will be nine companies in the Berlin area which will help GM test their new zero-emission program.

The fourth-generation fuel-cell vehicle is a result of 10 years of development and work. The model features hydrogen and fuel-cell technology, and it is apart of a program which had already logged 434,959 miles in global testing.

The new GM HydroGen4 fuel-cell vehicle will use 440 single cells which combine hydrogen and oxygen from the air, to produce electricity. The fuel-cell stack will provide power to the 98-hp electric motor and it will allow speeds from 0-100km/h in around 12 seconds, with a top speed of 160km/h.

The HydroGen4 is also connected to a 1.8kWh buffer battery which will store extra energy from a regenerative braking system. There will be a carbon fibre tank which holds 4.2kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bars, which will allow for a range of 199miles.

The HydroGen4 is said to be able to run in sub-zero temperatures, and it is designed to be as safe as a conventional vehicle.

The Sequel is a hydrogen fuel cell-powered concept car and sport utility vehicle from General Motors, employing the latest generation of HydroGen3 technology developed by Opel. The Sequel uses a drive-by-wire system. It has a range of three hundred miles, and its only emission is water. It debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show and is now being shown at the 75th international car show in Geneva, Switzerland. GM chief and chief executive Rick Wagoner suggested it will be over a decade before it goes into production. GM announced September 11, 2006 that their Sequel all-wheel drive fuel-cell vehicle will be a Chevrolet. The next-generation hydrogen car was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in 2005 and at that time was called the “GM Sequel;” the redesigned version of the crossover was unveiled by Larry Burns, GM’s vice president in charge of R&D and product planning.

This vehicle can accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than ten seconds. Additionally, it provides a high level of control on bumpy terrain, snow, and ice. 42 percent more torque and quicker deceleration when braking are additional benefits of some of the new technologies used in the Sequel.

- GM HyWire Concept (2002)

Click Thumbnail to download (size 1600 x 1200 pixels)

The Hy-wire (Hydrogen drive-by-wire) is a concept car from General Motors originally introduced in January 2002. The car runs on hydrogen fuel cells and uses a drive-by-wire system, meaning that the car is controlled electronically. GM asked school children to name the car, and one of them suggested "Hy-wire".

In 2003, General Motors stated that it was confident that it could produce a commercially viable model by 2010.

Design
Due to hydrogen fuel cell drive system used by the Hy-wire the conventional car layout has been revamped. Without the need for a conventional engine block and transmission system coupled to the steering column and pedals through mechanical linkage the car's power system and single electric motor are built into a flat skateboard configuration. This serves to lower the car's center of gravity but more importantly to standardize vehicle drive train systems. Because all propulsion and energy storage systems are housed in the skateboard designers are free to arrange the passenger compartment however they see fit. This allows for highly flexible vehicle configurations such as a 4 door sedan, mini van, or even a small bus to be placed on the same drive system, with the only difference being the shape of the car's upper body and the location of seats. The skateboard itself contains crumple zones similar to those in conventional automobiles.

Driver interface
The car's drive-by-wire system coupled with cameras instead of mirrors and multiple LCD displays for feedback to the driver theoretically allows the driver's seat to be located anywhere; however, most current designs still favor the driver in front of or beside the other passengers for maximum visibility. The digital coupling of the controls to the drive system means neither the driver's seat nor the steering and throttle controls must be fixed in place. For example, the 2003 concept model has a single control interface that can be operated from either the right or left front seats, and the 2004 concept design places the two front seats on a rotating platform which allows the driver and passenger seats to be swapped or the driver to sit in front of the passenger for greater flexibility.

Powerplant
The Hy-wire is powered by a fuel cell capable of producing 94 kilowatts of power continuously without refueling on a saltwater solution and up to 129 kilowatts for short periods. The fuel cell itself is supplied with hydrogen from 3 tanks of compressed hydrogen located in the skateboard holding 2 kg (4 lb), but future models may hold larger capacities, yielding increased driving range. With its three-phase electric motor the 1,814 kg (4,000 lb) vehicle has a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mi/h).

ABOUT GM
General Motors, often known as simply GM, is a U.S. automaker founded by William C. Durant in Flint, Michigan, now based in Detroit, Michigan, and is the world's 18th largest corporate entity in existence by revenues and also the world's second-largest automaker, as ranked by global unit sales for 2008.

GM previously led in global sales for 77 consecutive years (1931 to 2007), longer than any other automaker. It manufactures cars and trucks in 34 countries. GM employs 244,500 people around the world, and sold and serviced vehicles in some 140 countries. On July 10, 2009, the company emerged from a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization and plans an initial public stock offering (IPO) in 2010. GM plans to focus its business on its four core US brands — Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC, although, in Europe Opel/Vauxhall vehicles will remain in production and continue to be operated by GM.

GM HISTORY
General Motors was founded on September 16, 1908, in Flint, Michigan, as a holding company for Buick, then controlled by William C. Durant. It acquired Oldsmobile later that year. In 1909, Durant brought in Cadillac, Elmore, Oakland and several others. Also in 1909, General Motors acquired the Reliance Motor Truck Company of Owosso, Michigan, and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan, the predecessors of GMC Truck. Durant lost control of GM in 1910 to a bankers' trust, because of the large amount of debt taken on in its acquisitions coupled with a collapse in new vehicle sales. A few years later, Durant started the Chevrolet Motor car company and through this he secretly purchased a controlling interest in GM. Durant took back control of the company after one of the most dramatic proxy wars in American business history. Durant then reorganized General Motors Company into General Motors Corporation. Shortly after, he again lost control, this time for good, after the new vehicle market collapsed. Alfred P. Sloan was picked to take charge of the corporation and led it to its post war global dominance. This unprecedented growth of GM would last into the early 1980s when it employed 349,000 workers and operated 150 assembly plants.

GM has led in global sales for 77 consecutive years (1931 to 2007), longer than any other automaker. It manufactures cars and trucks in 34 countries. GM employs 244,500 people around the world, and sold and serviced vehicles in some 140 countries.

- FISKER Karma (2010)

Click Thumbnail to download (size 1600 x 1200 pixels)

The Fisker-Karma is a plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan revealed on 14 January 2008 and manufactured by Fisker Automotive, a joint venture of Quantum Technologies and Fisker-Coachbuild, LLC, announced 5 September 2007[3] and to be sold in the summer of 2009, manufacturing in this year fall, and delivering cars in early-mid 2010. The Karma was introduced at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

The PHEV-50, 50-mile (80 km) all-electric range, is anticipated in late 2009 to sell for US$ 80,000.

The Fisker-Karma is the first vehicle released by the Fisker-Automotive Company. The Karma features the Q-Drive technology and is powered by a innovative petrol engine/electric motors combination; Q-Drive is a series hybrid system meaning that the engine is mated with a generator to provide an electrical connection to the motors and also recharge the batteries and as such the electric motors are the only mechanical driving force connected to the wheels. As a factory option the Karma can be fitted with a solar paneled roof not only to aid in the recharging of its Lithium-Ion batteries but also to aid the cabin climate control system. The solar roof is capable of a half kilowatt-hour a day and is estimated to provide up to 4 to 5 miles (6.4–8.0 km) of additional range a week assuming continuously sunny days. Additionally, the car will offer a set of solar panels for the garage/house which may charge the Karma entirely 'off the grid'.

Although Fisker-Automotive has yet to release solid statistics regarding Karma’s fuel economy, the company estimates the average driver will only have to refill the fuel tank annually provided they do not drive more than 50 miles (80 km) a day. Fisker-Automotive have also suggested that when in 'sport-hybrid' mode the Karma will be capable of doing 100 miles a gallon (2.35 l/100 km) of fuel consumed for a range of 300 miles (480 km). Despite its eco-friendly background the Karma features a 125 mph (201 km/h) top speed and is capable of reaching 60 mph (97 km/h) from a standstill in 5.8 seconds.
